Collection Access Policy


  1. Positive identification is required for all prospective researchers. This will usually take the form of a driver’s license.
  2. To obtain materials, the Researcher Registration Form should be completed along with a call slip.
  3. All briefcases, portfolios, purses, backpacks, and other similar containers must be left with the reading room attendant.
  4. ALL Materials are to be used only in the reference room of the archives.
  5. No marking or writing upon archived materials is permitted. Extreme care should be exercised when handling fragile items.
  6. Use only one folder at a time. Use only one box at a time.
  7. The exact order and arrangement of the materials must be maintained. If any mistakes are discovered, please call it to the attention of a staff member. Do not rearrange the items yourself.
  8. In citing these materials, please cite the full name of the collection, the collection number, and the archives. Example: Mitchell, Annie. Papers, 1902-1929. KC Manuscript Collection 121, Archives of the City of Kingsport, Tennessee.
  9. The Archives Staff reserves the right to inspect any items taken from the Archives upon completion of research.
  10. According to Tennessee State Law (T.C.A. 39-16-504) it is a Class A misdemeanor to intentionally destroy, conceal, remove or impair the verity, legibility, or availability of a governmental record. Violators will be prosecuted.
  11. smoking, eating, and drinking are Not permitted.
