American Legion Hammond Post, No. 3 Decorating Committee Collection, 1969-1970

KC Manuscript Collection 69

ABSTRACT:
The American Legion Hammond Post, No. 3 Decorating Committee Collection consists of correspondence, cemetery lists, and maps used to decorate graves on Memorial Day during 1969 and 1970.  The correspondence is from Elizabeth Goerdel and Dr. C. James Frye, Chair of the Legion’s Decorating Committee.  Other people that helped place flags on area cemeteries were Karl Goerdel, Elizabeth’s husband, C.K. Koffman, and Hugh Nelms.  Graveyards discussed were primarily in Hawkins County and appear to be relatively small based on the limited number of names listed for the various sites.  Crude hand-drawn maps showing the grave locations of veterans are included for the following cemeteries: Morrison,Mt.Carmel, Lone Star, Mullins, Dykes,Murray, Mowell, Soloman’s Temple, and Walker Fork.
