Barnes and Bridwell Families Photograph, c. 1920s

KC Manuscript Collection 211

ABSTRACT:
The photograph shows members of the Barnes and Bridwell families standing inside their Five Points Self Service Store located in Kingsport, Tennessee.  The grocery store’s owner and manager, James T. Barnes, is visible in the image along with James “Jim” Bridwell, Ray Bridwell, and five other family members.  The area pictured was the store’s grocery department.  Although not shown, Bridwell’s Meat Market was located in the building’s rear.  Based on visual clues, it appears the photograph was taken sometime during the Christmas season.  The grocery store closed during the early-1940s prior to the rationing of food under the Office of Price Administration.
