Demosthean Literary Society and Franklin Literary Society Records, March 1888-1895

KC Manuscript Collection 57

ABSTRACT:
The Demosthean Literary Society and Franklin Literary Society Records consists of one record book composed of a couple-hundred pages.  Meeting minutes are the primary materials although there are a constitution and by-laws for the Franklin Literary Society and two undated student daily attendance reports of School No. Four, District No. 18 in Sullivan County,Tennessee.  It appears that the organization changed its name from the Demosthean to the Franklin Literary Society sometime between May and September 1894.  Members in both organizations extemporaneously debated topical issues that are mentioned in the minutes.  Participants were from various voting districts within Sullivan County and met for their meetings in the Hall at Holton Academy in Blountville,Tennessee.
