HISTORICAL NOTE:
Ellis Binkley first came to Kingsport in 1941 as a reporter for the Times-News, eventually rising through the ranks as photographer, city editor, managing editor, political editor, and executive editor retiring in 1973.  During retirement Binkley was associate professor of journalism at East Tennessee State University.  His thirty-year career as a journalist was noted at the local, state, and national levels.

Binkley served two terms as director of the Tennessee Press Association.  He was awarded the Newspaper Man of the Year Award in 1965.  Binkley was also active in many community organizations including the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew, Tri City Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi (a professional organization of journalists), and the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra.  In addition, Binkley played with the Kingsport Community Band and served as a Sunday school teacher and department superintendent at Kingsport’s First Baptist Church.
