BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Crockett attended Dobyns-BennettHigh School and graduated in 1930.  During this time he lived on Shelby Street in Kingsport.  After graduation he and his mother relocated to WashingtonD.C. where he began a career as a cartoonist for the Washington Star evening newspaper.  His political illustrations became a mainstay for the conservative journal and Crockett later specialized in portraits of national figures such as Senators and Supreme Court justices.  Crockett died in 2000.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The bulk of the Gibson Crockett Cartoons and Correspondence collection consists of eight cartoons. Accompanying the cartoons are several letters of correspondence between Gibson Crockett and Ann Morison.  The letters have to do with Crockett donating his work to the Kingsport Library.  In addition, the collection contains two computer printout copies of Army-Navy magazine covers that feature Crockett’s illustrations.  And there are several photocopies of articles having to do with Crockett’s life and work.
