BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Home and Neighborhood Development Sponsors (HANDS) was a program developed in 1957 that was sponsored by Sears Roebuck and Company. HANDS aimed to encourage wide scale citizen efforts to preserve and beautify neighborhoods and upgrade deteriorating ones.

In 1963, the city of Kingsport received a grant of $400 from the Sears Community Improvement Fund and HANDS. The HANDS committee worked closely with local garden clubs to decide where and how the money should be used and greatly encouraged other civic clubs to participate.
