Provenance: The Joan F. Halburnt Collection was donated to the Archives of the City of Kingsport by an anonymous donor in May, 2013. It was mailed to the archives via Jonesborough, Tennessee with no note and no return address, however, Ms. Halburnt’s name is written on several of the yearbooks in the collection.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Joan F. Halburnt was born on October 21, 1902. She graduated from the State Teachers College in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1932. She taught for the Sullivan County School system for thirty-four years and was married to Thomas J. Halburnt. She was a member of the Dixie Study Club, the Woodlawn Garden Club, and of Fall Branch UMC.

The Dixie Study Club was organized in March 1939 to study southern literature and southern personalities. Membership in the club was limited to women from southern states. The Woodlawn Garden Club of Kingsport, TN was organized by Venus Barnett in 1953. The collection is arranged chronologically into three folders and there are no series or subseries. One folder is dedicated to the Woodlawn Garden Club yearbooks, one to the Dixie Study Club yearbooks, and one to the study club’s luncheon programs.
