John W. Stiles Collection, 1930-1960

ABSTRACT:
The John W. Stiles Collection contains photographs, newspaper clippings, four issues of TEC News, certificates and honorariums, and correspondence relating to the career of the Kingsport resident. Stiles had a long and varied career, serving his country first in the army and then in the private sector where he was involved in the Manhattan Project. As a member of the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew, Stiles served the citizens of Kingsport as well.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:
John Stiles was born during 1913 in Chattanooga,Tennessee. He attended Mount Pleasant College in North Carolina before serving in the United States Army Medical Department in the 1930s. Stiles worked at several locations from the 1930s through the 1950s, including Tennessee Eastman, Clinton Engineer Works in Oak Ridge,Tennessee, and Holston Defense. Stiles worked mostly in supervisory positions, although his job at Eastman was as an assistant research chemist. A certificate dated 6 August 1945 was awarded to Stiles in appreciation for “work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb.” He died in 1960.
