BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE:

The Kingsport Central Improvement Committee (KCIC) was organized in 1977 to aid in the improvement of downtown Kingsport. Although the agency is most noted for instigating physical improvements along downtown streets, its main mission was to create an investment climate in downtown. The corporation contracted several outside assessment sources as well as coordinating their own Task Force to review the investment and development potential of downtown Kingsport. The overall conclusion was that strip centers and shopping malls had drained the retail trade irrevocably from downtown; the task now facing downtown businesses was to find a new niche for downtown.

The charter for the KCIC was for three years, and at that time their money ran out, Faced with bankruptcy, the KCIC passed the downtown revitalization baton to the Downtown Kingsport Association (DKA). The KCIC was Kingsport’s first downtown management agency, and its short-lived stint as a promoter of downtown facilitated the efforts of the DKA to promote not only new business but also community events downtown.

SCOPE AND CONTENT:

The KCIC Records contain materials of interest on prominent Kingsport civic, business, and governmental leaders of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The records also include financial records, minutes of board meetings, press clippings, and information on Downtown activities and projects.

The records are arranged alphabetically by subject/ folder heading.
