BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Muriel Millar Clark was born November 2, 1920 in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the second of William Clark and Bessie Millar’s three children. The family eventually settled in Knoxville, Tennessee where Muriel completed high school and attended business school at National Business College and the American Institute of Banking. While volunteering for a Junior League event she met Harold Spoden, a graduate of the University of Michigan who was working in Knoxville for the TVA. The couple married in December of 1941, just as America was entering World War II. Muriel lived with Hal in several states while Hal worked as a civil engineer for Pan American Airways, the Oakridge atomic facility, and the Naval Air Transport Services. After the war ended, the Spodens returned to Knoxville for four years before moving permanently to Kingsport, Tennessee, where Hal eventually started his own engineering firm in 1956; H. T. Spoden & Assoc.

Muriel raised two children in Kingsport, Diane and Clark, who both graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School. She became active in the historic restoration community after the last resident of the Netherland Inn, Nettie P. Cloud, died in February of 1965, leaving the inn in a terrible state of disrepair. Muriel joined purposes with local resident Lucy May Crymble in July of 1966 and formed the Netherland Inn Association (NIA) in order to raise funds for the purchase of the site. In September of 1967, the inn, along with .74 acres of river front land was purchased. Muriel began twenty months of full-time research into the history of the inn and the Boatyard community.

Muriel performed research for numerous other commissions and organizations. Those included the Tennessee American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, the Sullivan County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, the Kingsport Historic Zoning Commission, and the Sullivan County Historic Commission. She was also a member of numerous community organizations including the Long Island Chapter of the DAR, the Rocky Mount Association, the East Tennessee Historical Society, the Tennessee Historical Society, and the Junior League of Kingsport.

Muriel’s countless hours of research and love of learning were the foundations for the many works on local history that she authored. Among those are The Early Years on Bays Mountain (1975), the Historical Map of the Long Island of the Holston (1969) for which she received a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History, the Historical Sites of Sullivan County (1976), The Long Island of the Holston: Sacred Island of the Cherokee Indians (1977), Ancestry and Descendants of Richard Netherland Esq. (1979), Kingsport Heritage: The Early Years 1700-1900 (1992), An American Ancestry of the Clark-Morton and Tayman-Millar-Adams Families (1995), and The Netherland Inn Chronicles (1999).

Muriel had a great love of genealogy and she produced a family history on her maternal and paternal lines, An American Ancestry, as well as one for her husband’s lines. Muriel died on April 2, 1999 with her husband, two children and three of her four grandchildren surviving.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Muriel C. Spoden Collection is comprised of the library and papers of Muriel Millar Clark Spoden. Muriel was one of two founding members of the Netherland Inn Association and much of the research in the collection is related to Muriel’s investigation of the owners and occupants of the Inn and of related Boatyard businesses and their descendants. Other research relates to the historic sites of Sullivan County and early Kingsport. Some of the genealogical research is in support of her own family history, the history of prominent East Tennessee settlers, and the history of her clients’ families. A significant portion of the papers document the research, writing, publication, and sale of Muriel’s many books and the Historic Map of the Long Island of the Holston. The collection contains original items such as letters, ledgers, journals, photographs, scrapbooks, receipts, and diaries of historic figures. Other media in the collection includes, film, audio recordings, newspaper clippings, maps, architectural drawings, negatives, instructional displays, photocopies, and personal correspondence.

Photographs and negatives included depict restoration projects in progress as well as period structures of the area. Some of the earliest known photos of the Inn are housed in this series. Information from the archaeological surveys is included, press coverage of the Netherland Inn Association’s (NIA) work is included, and correspondence with some of the Netherland and early Kingsport resident’s descendants is also included. For more information, researchers should consult with the NIA.

Series VIII. Professional Organizations, 1966-1998, Boxes 48-54

Subseries IX-A. An American Ancestry of the Clark-Morton and Tyman-Millar-Adams Families, 1994-1995, Box 55

This book is a narrative of Muriel’s maternal and paternal lines. It includes photographs, pedigree charts, histories about her ancestor’s countries of origin and other helpful aids to the family history researcher. The subseries contains a complete, published version and some correspondence.

Subseries IX-B. The Ancestors and Descendants of Richard Netherland, Esq., 1931-1989, Boxes 56-58

This book is a historical and genealogical study of the original Netherland family from which the inn gets its name. The subseries is divided by chapter and the files contain research on each descendant and their families. A draft of the manuscript is also included, as well as correspondence and expense information.

Subseries IX-C. Early Years on Bays Mountain, 1970-1980, Box 58

This book covers the history of Bays Mountain from prehistoric time to the twentieth century when the reservoir was built and the last few settlers were still on the mountain. It includes interviews with members of the Gregg family who lived on the mountain. A draft of the manuscript is included.

Subseries IX-D. Historic Sites of Sullivan County, 1967-1981, Boxes 59-60

Information concerning a copyright infringement case is included with the files, along with typed history narrative, drafts of the bibliography and legend, and sales information.

Subseries IX-F. Kingsport Heritage, The Early Years 1700-1900, 1972-2000, Boxes 61-63

This outstanding history of Kingsport and its residents serves as a fundraiser for the NIA up to the present day. The subseries contains a copy of the book organized by chapter, as well as a draft, a mock-up, and information on the design and expenses of Kingsport Heritage.

Subseries IX-G. The Long Island of the Holston: Sacred Island of the Cherokee Nation, 1976-1977, Boxes 63-64

Because The Long Island of the Holston was published in a version that Spoden did not herself edit, the drafts and manuscript housed in this subseries does not match the printed booklet. The correspondence file contains information regarding the limited version published.

Subseries IX-H. The Netherland Inn Chronicles, 1999, Box 65

The Netherland Inn Chronicles describes the Inn, its residents, and the business conducted within its walls over the years. It was the last book Muriel Spoden wrote before she died. This small subseries contains a typed manuscript and a publication copy.

Many of the photocopied sources have Muriel’s handwritten notations on them. A significant amount of material in this subseries supports the establishment of the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Site. Box 69 is a subject file with note cards summarizing historical figures and events. Files are arranged alphabetically by surname, county, or historic site or event name.

Subseries X-C. Sullivan County & Kingsport History, 1897-1998, Boxes 78-87

This subseries not only contains reference sources similar to subseries A-B, but also numerous personal notes created by Muriel as she pursued research on significant East Tennessee historical locations and settlements.
