BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

 

In 1985, Kingsport Mayor Hunter Wright appointed a special quality commission to implement a “Quality First” program and under chamber president Bill Ring an advisory board of industry and business leaders functioned in the community in this capacity. Under the tutelage of national and regional quality improvement associations, a 7-day workshop was conducted at Northeast State Technical College and since 1986 these community collaborations continued.

 

On October 7, 1987, the National Center for Quality, Kingsport, Tennessee was incorporated. On April 20, 1989 this was amended to National Center for Quality (NCQ) and was recognized with 501©(3) status in September of that year. Their first board meeting convened in January of 1990. In 1994, a full-time executive director was hired, Richard Hill, and the Center moved its operations to Northeast State.

The NCQ’s mission was to create communities of excellence by achieving improvements in quality and productivity in business, government, industry, and service organizations by offering the following services: consulting, education and training, referral, and technology development.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

The materials in this collection include meeting documentation, correspondence with clients and quality partners, course outlines, and agreements between the NCQ and their seminar instructors.

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

 

Series I, Organizational Files, 1987-1996, Boxes 1-2

This series contains minutes for various National Center for Quality (NCQ) committees and full and executive board meetings. It contains several histories and vision statements of the organization as well as several notebooks compiled by members for use in their duties. The series is arranged chronologically.

 

Series II, Seminars, 1989-1995, Boxes 3.

 

This series contains material about the organization and planning of seminars and the topic, instructors, and attendees associated with them. The series is arranged chronologically.

 

Series III, Client Files, 1989-1995, Box 4.

 

This series contains files related to clients of the NCQ and certain special projects.

 

Series IV, Health Improvement Partnership Projects, 1989-2002, Box 4.

 

This series contains member folders and organizational materials for Community Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP) and Kingsport Area Health Improvement Project (KAHIP); which are two organizations that resulted from the quality and process improvement efforts of NCQ, its members and community partners. The series is organized alphabetically.
