Genealogy/Local History


The Palmer Room contains materials pertaining to Tennessee history, local history and genealogy. It is dedicated to the memory of Colonel E.W. Palmer, former chairman of the Board of Trustees and benefactor of this library.

Books in the Palmer Room have “TR” as part of their call number. They are reference books, and as such, may be used only in the Palmer Room and may not be checked out.

Items of special interest available in the Palmer Room
Genealogical and historical maps


  • A microfilm file that contains the Kingsport Times News from 1916+

  • Microfilm files of many area census records from 1810 through 1930

  • Card file of tombstone inscriptions and a notebook of Sullivan County cemeteries

  • Genealogy magazines

  • Vertical files containing clippings, pamphlets and other items relating to local history

  • Subject books by county for Tennessee and Virginia

Microfilm readers and reader/printers are available in the Palmer Room. Copies are $.15 per page and payment is made at the desk.

Ancestry Library
The Ancestry Library Edition collection has approximately 4,000 databases including key collections such as U.S. Federal Census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; the Map Center containing more than 1,000 historical maps; American Genealogical Biographical Index (over 200 volumes); Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage (over 150 volumes); The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1630; Social Security Death Index (updated monthly); WWI Draft Registration Cards; Federal Slave Narratives; and a strong Civil War collection. In the coming year, still more indexes and original images will be added to the new Immigration collection. Please note: This resource is available only on the computers from inside the Kingsport Public Library – it is NOT available to you at home or work through our Web site (unlike our other databases). You will need to come to the library to use this particular online database.

Heritage Quest:
Collection of over 25,000 family history books and the U.S. Census from 1790 through 1930. Also includes the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files and Freedman's Bank Records.
