KINGSPORT LIBRARY ROBOTICS CAMP
At the KINGSPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY
June 3-July 8
Space limited to 20 participants ages 13-18
$25 fee cash/check when you register at the Library (bring parent/guardian)
The Kingsport Public Library is looking for twenty teens (ages 13-18) to participate in our first annual Robotics & Electronics Camp being held June 3 through July 8. The participants will receive hands-on training to create a fully functional line-following or sumo wrestling robot as well as various other small electronic projects. After completion of the camp, the students will display their creations during the FunFest 2013 Mini-Maker Faire on July 14, and afterwards in the library’s lobby display case. After the display, each participant will take their creation home to keep.
All hardware and tools will be provided through a generous grant from Eastman Chemical Company and a donation from the Friends of the Kingsport Public Library. Members of the Mountain Lab Hackerspace will be providing the instruction and training. A minimal fee of $25, payable upon registration, and a commitment to attend five of the six workshops is required. Spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. To register, come by library’s youth services department and bring your Parent/Guardian with you to sign the paperwork.
Workshop Detailed Descriptions
Week 1 – June 3, 2013: 1:00-5:00 Introduction to Electricity & Circuits
Participants will learn electrical safety, basic circuit design, Ohm’s Law, and other fundamental principles in electricity and electronics
Week 2 – June 10, 2013: 1:00-5:00 Microcontroller Basics
Attendees will learn about microcontrollers and their use. The student will learn about analog signals, digital signals, PWM, and the basics of programming syntax
Week 3 – June 17, 2013:1:00-5:00 Basics of Robotics
This workshop will focus on the application of microcontrollers to robotics. Topics covered will include digital sensors, feedback loops, logic, and electromechanical control.
Week 4 – June 24, 2013:1:00-5:00 Soldering Techniques & Robot Assembly
The concept of this workshop is to teach proper and safe techniques for soldering, dealing with static electricity, and minor fabrication methods using simple tools.
Week 5 – July 1, 2013: 1:00-5:00Introduction to Programming for Robotics
This workshop will bring the newly completed robot together with the previously learned basic programming. Further programming of the specific robot platform will be discussed.
Week 6 – July 8, 2013: 1:00-5:00 Advanced Programming
This final workshop will focus on advanced programming functions of the robotic platform as well as other microcontroller functions. Students will discuss concepts such as telemetry, advanced sensor aggregation, etc. This workshop is also a catch-all to bring any attendee up to speed in preparation for the exhibition.
Exhibition – Sunday, July 14 1:00-6:00 at Kingsport Civic Auditorium
Attendees of the workshop will be able to show off their new found skills at the 2nd Annual FunFest Mini-Maker Faire. This event will be a non-competitive environment where students will display their robotic and electronic creations in several ways. Mini events include: Navigation Maze, Sumo Match / Tug of War, Line Following, and a general show and tell arena.
Sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company and the Friends of the Kingsport Public Library. Classes taught by Mountain Lab Hackerspace.
