BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

The McDowell Photography was located in downtown Kingsport on Broad Street during the 1950s. The Blue Ridge Glass Corporation was first organized in 1925 and located on Horse Creek Road near East Sullivan Street through the 1940s and 1950s. Joseph H. Lewis was the vice president and general manager. The photographs were found among item’s in the Saint-Gobain archives in Pennsylvania, a corporation that once had a presence in Kingsport.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Blue Ridge Glass – McDowell Photograph Collection consists of seventy-three images of various subjects. The majority of the images are of etched art glass. Several of these have photographer’s notes on the verso concerning distance and f-stop settings. The second most commonly covered subject in the collection is of the construction progress of a manufacturing facility that included kilns. The donor thought these might by of a Blue Ridge Glass facility.
