Destruction of the Downtowner
View of the demolition of the Downtowner Hotel during the early 1990s. The image was taken from a rooftop vantage point across West Center Street. Following the building’s destruction, the property became a city parking lot.

May Day Festival at Lincoln Elementary
Third graders circling the May Day pole at Lincoln Elementary School. Although May Day is not celebrated as widely today, the activity was once very popular. The pole would have been decorated with brightly colored ribbon and streamers.

Tornado Damage
House destroyed by the March 14, 1933 Cherry Hill Tornado in Kingsport. The tornado caused the deaths of eight people. The Red Cross and the Salvation Army established relief stations to handle the emergency, and local physicians worked through the night and following day to help those hurt by the storm.
