KC Manuscript Collection 106

Archives of the City of Kingsport
Kingsport, Tennessee

Historical Note:
Thomas T. McNeer, Jr. began his career as a photographer in Kingsport, Tennessee during the mid 1940s. Having been raised in Kingsport, McNeer succeeded as a photographer. His work represents a combination of portraiture and business/industry photography. In addition, he served as company photographer for Kingsport Press, Mead Corporation, Mason and Dixon, and other businesses within Kingsport.

McNeer’s work as a professional photographer ended for the most part during the early 1980s. It was at this time that he founded the Kingsport Archive of History (KAH) in 1982. The non-profit organization was dedicated to documenting and preserving Kingsport’s history. McNeer’s efforts with the KAH culminated during the early 1990s when Kingsport city leaders decided to create an archives department within the city’s downtown library that was preparing to renovate and expand. It was during this time that McNeer died on 15 March 1991.
